Many of my recipes are from the 1970s, when we still made our own food. You see, my mother and both of my grandmothers were horrible cooks. I had a love for good food. I wasn't content to just throw anything in my mouth. You could even say that I was a food snob.
Since I couldn't afford to eat at 5 star restaurants every night, I had to learn to cook.
And - Since I was a working single mom- sure, I would try new packaged foods as they came out, but they were always a disappointment for my well developed tastebuds. I could taste the chemicals. ICK.
About the time my daughter was born, a lot was coming out about how dangerous packaged and processed foods are. She was a preemie annd already had a compromised immune system, I was getting older, and many of my friends already had diabetes, high blood pressure, and cancers. I made a decision that we were going to eat as few of these lethal foods as humanly possible.
I look at some of the healthy recipes around, and I'll tell you what – I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole! Yuck!
I eat pizza, from a pizzeria. Not the tomato sauce and cheese on cardboard stuff from the freezer section. Well, Home Run Inn isn't bad for a frozen pizza. Tastes OK, and doesn't have too much junk in it if I'm really in a bind.
I eat too many sweets, but at least my meals aren't filled with extra sugars, soldium and chemicals on top of it. We all have our weaknesses, don't we?
At age 55, I am a size 2.
Point is - You don't have to be a saint.

You know what's so funny about this healthy eating program? I'm eating more....and I'M gaining weight. I need to! I'm eating more, and feeling better. My family are benefiting from lighter, fresher meals, and those among them who maybe do need to watch their waistlines are feeling fitter and looking better, and the kilos seem to be vanishing!

The problems with the Government Dietary Guidelines according to the American Dietary Association -
Cooking Skills: ADA is pleased to see the emphasis on helping consumers improve cooking skills. However, many consumers do not have the time or inclination to cook from scratch, using little added salt, sugar or fat and avoiding processed ingredients, and they will need significant nutrition education to learn these skills. Cooking with less sugar and salt will change product outcomes given the properties of these additives and their role in food quality. Consumers will need new recipes and nutrition information to meet the recommendations. Additionally, many factors can contribute to an individual’s understanding of nutrition and healthful eating habits. Cooking skills are important but an overall investment in nutrition and health literacy is critical.
Translation/Implementation: Since these guidelines differ noticeably from the actual consumption patterns of the U.S. population, translation is going to be key. When translating this report into the Dietary Guidelines and into the public sphere, the message of gradual, small changes in a positive direction will need to be emphasized. Very simple, very practical ideas and suggestions are necessary for most consumers to motivate them to utilize the guidelines to achieve a more nutritious diet. Investment is needed in innovative nutrition education and promotion across the lifespan to give individuals and families the knowledge and skills to navigate a challenging food environment.
