Stop the Pity Party Already

First things first.

Stop the pity party. You didn’t do that much damage. You ate a few hundred extra calories yesterday. So What? A pound is 3500 calories. You didn’t get into trouble because of one day.

Now that you’ve stuffed yourself more than the Turkey – its time to step up and burn a few more calories.

The great thing about Black Friday is that its a lot of exercise. Park a mile away from the entrance, walk around all day, lug a bunch of stuff around, walk a mile back to the car. Except that you’re likely to get hungry while you’re in the mall – and most of the mall food choices will negate any calories you might have burned. Heres’ a couple things you can do to make sure that you don’t pile on more calories than you’re going to burn -

Eat before you go to the mall

Yes, I know – but do it anyway. Even if its a piece of toast, a yogurt and a banana.

Bring a water bottle

You’ll be surprised at how much longer you can go if you have water.

When you do have to eat

Opt for a salad or subway. Stay away from heavy fat and calorie laden dressings like ranch or mayo.

If you’re not going to the mall

You have plenty of cleaning up to do. Taking out garbage, vacuuming and washing floors will get your heart pumping!

Take a walk.

Pop in an exercise video

Go to the gym

Dance

Go bowling

Put up the Christmas tree

Put Christmas lights on the house

Get up and get moving. If you can break a sweat, that’s even better.

When its time to pig out on the leftovers, make sure that there are plenty of vegetables on that plate too!

I’m snacking on cranberries. Love ‘em!

Last, but not least – get plenty of relaxation and sleep. We don’t get enough of either of these. Take full advantage of this long weekend to get yourself rebalanced. The next month is going to be pretty hectic!

A big study finds that Potato Chips pack on the pounds.

Really? Wow!

If yodon’t know how to stay thin and healthy – here’s the basics

Eat 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables a day

Eat throughout the day

Eat only real foods

Limit bad foods

Get some exercise everyday

Get enough sleep

Let Moderation be your motto

I think that’s worth millions more than another stoopid fat research study, don’t you?

“Its the Fat Place”

Former Taco Bell drive-thru, East Tawas, MI

The office lunch choice today was Taco Bell.

The co-worker gathering everyone’s orders says, I know you don’t want this – its the fat place.

Taco Bell is not the fat place. Its the fake chemicals layered with fat and sodium designed to be swallowed – not chewed – so you can eat more of it faster place. I don’t think they have a real piece of food in the place except maybe the tomatoes and the iceberg lettuce.

Call me a food snob, but I don’t like the taste of chemicals. Besides –

Tell me one organ in your body that can use the fake chemicals.

If your body can’t use them, where is it going?

You might think it just gets expelled, but that’s not true. It would be great if that happened. People’s bodies can’t process it as fast as they take it in.

So what does your body do with all this junk?

It stores it in your fat cells for safe keeping.

Its not a coincidence that obesity has been steadily rising since people started eating fake food.

But what really breaks my heart is when I see people with deteriorating health eat this stuff.

I wish I could save the world, but good health is a choice.

What Cinco De Mayo Taught Me About Snacking

Appetizer Marseille

Image via Wikipedia

We had a food day at the office to celebrate Cinco De Mayo.

There were fruits, and salsas, and cheese, and crackers, and some taco roll-up things, and these great toffee bars, and…

A lot of the food was actually healthy. That was a plus!

The problem is, it was all the kind of food that you grab a little every time you walk by. You never got full or satisfied. Its what I refer to as “mindless eating.” You don’t really realize how many calories you’re eating.

If you’re a Rebel With a Fork member, you’ve probably noticed that the appetizer section is pretty slim. These types of foods can devastate your waistline.

I got away from serving appetizers before holiday dinners because I want people to fill up on the good stuff. What I’ve found is, instead of being too full for dinner – most of your guests will eat all the appetizers, and still overstuff themselves on dinner. When you have appetizer before a dinner, you’re practically eating 2 dinners in one setting.

While snacks are fun, you have to eat them wisely. A late morning and a late afternoon snack will curb hunger and keep your sugar levels, and energy levels constant. But it needs to be a portion controlled snack. You don’t want to sit down with a bowl of salsa and a bag of chips. Faced with that, most of us won’t stop. That’s right – even me.

The secret to successful snacking is to put a serving on a plate, and put the rest away.

Don’t less mindless eating get the best of you!

Half the battle is just being aware of what you’re eating.

Whens the last time a calorie stopped you?

There’s all this hub-bub lately over making restaurant chains post calories counts for all of their food.

Don’t most of them do this already? Is it stopping anyone?

Calorie counting is misguided, and a waste of time.

Its not the calories that are the problem. Its the empty calories.

The food most people eat today has no nutritional value. It doesn’t fill you up, and it leaves you yearning for more.

Todays food is scientifically engineered to require little chewing so you can swallow it faster, and to take combinations of fat, sodium and suger and make it taste like…  food.

So you’re shoveling in food by the truckloads and you’re body is never satisfied. Is that because of the calories, or because of the make up of hte food to begin with?

If you wer to change your focus away from losing weight and instead focus on getting nutrients – you would be amazed at how fast you would lose weight, and how much better you feel.

Warped thinking keeps you fat

There’s a girl I know who likes to cook, sort of. She makes all sorts of wonderful sounding dinners, courtesy of Trader Joe’s. Which is ok I guess. I haven’t really looked into their stuff. It’s a little pricey for me.

So, I guess if you do it this way, healthy eating is expensive.

But, this same girl eats McDonalds for breakfast complete with a large pop. She eats the fast foods that the girls in the office order every day. They spend $8, $10, and sometimes more every day on lunch.

So when she was talking about how expensive healthy eating is, I pointed out how much money she’s spending on lunch everyday.

Today, I had heard enough of the ‘I’m so fat’ complaints. I pointed out that she’s eating McDonalds for breakfast, and more fast food for lunch.

What it comes down to is, either you hate your body and how you feel everyday enough to change, or you’re willing to accept it. Its your choice. But please spare us the constant complaining.

Its easy to get thin

I was just listening to a ‘motivational’ speaker. He was talking about people who want to lose weight.

He said, “We all know how to lose weight – you eat fewer calories and get more exercise. There, you have it. You never have to buy another diet book.”

While that makes perfect common sense, and may have been true 30, 40 years ago – its not true today. You already know that, right?

Today, there are so many chemicals in our foods that our bodies cannot not process them.

So, eat real food, eat less, exercise more.

Now you have it. You never have to buy another diet book ;-)
